Baldur’s Gate 3 Review: The RPG Genre’s New Gold Standard

Larian Studios set out to prove that a deep, systems-driven tabletop RPG could also be a mainstream hit, and Baldur’s Gate 3 delivers on that promise with staggering ambition. Few games this generation offer as much genuine player agency.

Choices That Actually Matter

Nearly every quest in Baldur’s Gate 3 can be approached in multiple ways, and the game is remarkably willing to let those choices break things, reroute storylines, or lock off entire areas. Dialogue checks feel meaningful rather than cosmetic, companions react to your decisions with real consequences, and the writing throughout is sharp, funny, and often surprisingly emotional. Origin companions like Astarion, Shadowheart, and Gale are some of the best-written party members in recent RPG memory.

Combat and Systems

Built on a faithful adaptation of Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition rules, combat rewards creative thinking over brute force. Environmental interactions—shoving enemies off ledges, igniting oil slicks, using verticality and terrain—turn even simple fights into small puzzles. The freedom to combine spells, items, and party abilities in unexpected ways means encounters rarely feel solved the same way twice.

Where It Stumbles

Act 3 shows clear signs of scope strain: bugs are more frequent, pacing loosens, and some late questlines feel less polished than the meticulously crafted opening acts. Performance in the busier parts of the city can also dip on lower-end hardware.

Verdict

Despite a rougher final act, Baldur’s Gate 3 is a triumph of player-driven storytelling. It treats its audience as intelligent, curious, and capable of handling real consequences—and it is better for it.
